History of Auld Lang Syne

The song comes from a 1788 Scottish poem by Robert Burns and was never intended to be a New Year’s song.

The phrase “For Auld Lang Syne” means “for (the sake of) old times” and the poem was to celebrate our oldest and best friendships. It fits in well with the reflective nature of New Year’s Eve, when people traditionally return home to be with their loved ones.

There are several variations but below you’ll find a simplified fun English translation. Enjoy and Happy New Year!

Auld Lang Syne (lyrics translated from a Robert Burns poem)

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
In the days of auld lang syne?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear
for auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for the sake of auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup!
and surely I’ll buy mine!
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for the sake of auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine;
We’ve wandered many a weary fit,
since the days of auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared,
since the days of auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand my trusty friend!
and give me a hand o’ thine!
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for the days of auld lang syne.

CHORUS (x2)
